Lesson Plan No. 8
Forehand volleys

Lesson plans:
  Lesson Plan No. 8
  Lesson Plan No. 9
  Lesson Plan No. 10

Time: 45 to 60 minutes

Equipment: Spots, small and large soft balls, racquets, and small nets

1. Welcome/roll call (3 min.)

2. Warm-up (5 min.)

Split the warm-up between the following two drills:

Free running

Children can run in any direction, anywhere on the court, being careful not to run into or bump anyone else. Ask them to run as quietly as they can, then as noisily as they can.

Run and freeze

With the children running, on signal or command, have them stop or "freeze" and try to maintain balance while frozen.

Slow stretches (2 min.)

Have everyone count aloud while performing the following stretches:

  • Reach for the sky and down to your toes
  • Arm circles forward and backward
  • Trunk twists with airplane arms and feet still

3. Motor skills

Catching and throwing skills (10 min.)

Children may not be able to catch but may be able to trap a ball. Working with a parent-coach, ask each child to:

  • Roll a ball back and forth
  • Catch a ball in the air
  • Catch (or trap) a ball after one bounce, then two bounces
  • Toss up a beach ball and catch it in the air, then after the bounce
  • Toss a ball with two hands underhand to the coach
  • Play catch over the net

Hopscotch and roll (5 min.)

Set up a hopscotch pattern for the children to follow using spots or chalk. The coach should stand several feet in front of the hopscotch pattern facing the children. When the children complete the pattern, they should land on both feet. Then the coach can roll or bounce a ball to either side of the child, who moves to trap or catch it and then rolls, tosses or throws it back to the coach or at a target.

4. Racquet skills

Volleys (10 min.)

Have the children stand at a miniature net or a low spot on a full-size net and remind them how to high five the ball for a volley. Here are a few variations:

  • Count the repetitions aloud and rotate the children quickly.
  • Let children take a step back after a few successful volleys at each spot.
  • Set up targets across the net and award points for hitting them.
  • Do relay races counting target hits for each team.

Pop-up volleys (5-10 min.)

Children are in a squatting position 3 feet from the net. The coach across the net randomly tosses balls to them. When the ball is tossed, the child pops up and hits a volley. Award points for hitting a target or a ball the coach can catch in the air.

5. Wrap-up and practice suggestions

  • Keep a balloon aloft for 20 hits
  • Play two 5-minute games of catch during the week
